Herbivores in the public roster are the Western Horse, Ancient Bison, and Columbian Mammoth. They share plants, migration zones, and the spook system. They do not share a fight.
Spook and flee
A first attack can put a red exclamation mark, called spook, on a herbivore and give a stamina burst to run. A second level, shown with a blue mark, comes from holding the flee input when a predator is marked, or from holding it after you are already spooked. Flee mode boosts stamina and stops you from attacking. That trade is the point: a horse that keeps biting while fleeing wastes the escape.
Horses drain extra stamina if they attack at a full sprint, so chasing a predator is a poor plan. Horses also cannot attack a Smilodon unprovoked. After January 23, 2026, spook lasts until the target dies, drops combat, or you open a large distance, and peccary herds can chain-spook each other and nearby herbivores.
Western Horse
Equus ferus occidentalis is listed at about 320 kg, 147 cm at the shoulder, and a group size of 15. The default coat is Bay Dun and it is free. Horse coats are the only ones described with light, mid, and dark variants on the same pattern. The older coat count ran from 22 patterns to 66 once variants were included, and the January 2026 update added more gamepass leopard coats, so the live shop is larger than that article.
Use the horse to learn water, plants, and predator marks. Marking a predator is the Ancient Bison unlock.
Ancient Bison
Bos bison antiquus is listed at about 570 to 950 kg, 185 to 227 cm at the shoulder, and a group size of 20. Gameplay notes describe herds up to 20 moving between migration zones. The default coat is Plains and it is free.
Y starts a duel against another player. Winning a duel is a bison-only mission at 5 to 6 Tracks. The charge is the heavy secondary and it damages at full speed. A headbutt is the shorter front hit. Bison also get a quick turn while running. Jousting is how bison players sort rank inside the herd. A bison away from the herd, in rocks or thick trees, loses the open-ground charge that makes it dangerous.
Columbian Mammoth
Mammuthus columbi is listed at about 9,500 to 12,500 kg, 380 to 420 cm at the shoulder, and a group size of 12. The default coat is Tule and it is free. Bulls are larger, with larger tusks, and a male can only join a male group. Only body size changes stats. Tusk shape is visual.
Played well, a mammoth is described as safe from Dire Wolves and Smilodons because of its size. It is still slow. Its jobs are the ones the game calls ecosystem engineering: knock down trees, dig waterholes, and drop dung that speeds plants such as coffeeberry. Knocking down a tree is a mammoth-only mission at 3 to 4 Tracks.
The mammoth is the exception on survival score. Other animals gain a Track multiplier from surviving. The mammoth's survival score does not.
Eating
The Tracks page lists 18 plants that pay 1 to 2 Tracks per type on the hourly mission cooldown: Brodiaea, Buckwheat, Bulrush, Cactus, Chamise, Coffeeberry, Elderberry, Five-spot, Goldfield, Iris, Poppy, Sagebrush, Soapbush, Strawberry, Swordfern, Tarweed, Willow, and Yucca. The flora page says there are at least 22 edible plants and that some plants hurt if eaten. Cactus pricks on touch and still pays Tracks. Do not treat every green model as food.
A July 2026 Tracks tutorial talks about keeping hunger at or below half so new plants still pay when the cooldown returns. Exact hunger thresholds are not published on the fauna pages, so watch the meter you have rather than a number from outside the game.
Mineral licks are a herbivore mission at 2 to 3 Tracks on the wiki table. A player write-up later quoted 5. Use the reward you see in the Instinct or mission text on your server if they differ.
